Update:
Elm Heights Historic Restoration
|
|
Center
Court of the New Gym.
|
After
the façade, wiring and creation of the lower level, the most
visible work done during the renovation is the gleaming gym floor.
For many parents and community members the gym is the face of Harmony
they see the most often.
The repainting has been accented with new trim, window shades, and
curtains. To complete the look of the floor, elementary teacher Jeremy
Bazur and his students painted a new design at center court.
New doors have been placed on the front and back of the stage, and a new passageway
has been created off stage.
Harmony
School Continues as a Mentor School
“Harmony
School has been a leader in personalized K - 12 education,
so much so that it has been recognized by leaders in
the small schools, service learning, and First Amendment
arenas.” Scott Hutchinson, Development Director,

Through
a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Coalition
of Essential Schools (CES) in Oakland, California, has
launched a five-year
project to create “a network of 22 CES Mentor High Schools,
actively engaged in helping to support the creation of new small
schools.”
Harmony School is one of the mentor schools. We are continuing our
work with Connections Public Charter School in Hilo, Hawaii.
CES exists through ten principles: learning to use one’s
mind well; less is more, depth over coverage; goals apply to all
students;
personalization; student as worker, teacher as coach; demonstration
of mastery; a tone of decency and trust; commitment to the entire
school; resources dedicated to teaching and learning; and democracy
and equity.
CES has built a network of schools, centers, and like-minded educators “to
create and sustain personalized, equitable, and intellectually
challenging schools.”

Pictures from Science Day show some of the reasons Harmony School
has been selected as a Mentor School.
